The Petroff Defence is also called the Russian Game. It was invented by Alexander Petrov, a strong Russian chess master of the mid-19th century, who lived in Saint Petersburg. In 1809, he defeated Kopev and Baranov, Petersburg’s leading chess players, and became Russias best player at the age of 15.
In this chess defence Black does not protect his e-pawn playing 2….Nc6, but attacks the white e-pawn instead, playing 2….Nf6.
This is a very solid chess opening for Black and the game often ends in a draw.
